The writer points out several good concepts of the bad outcomes of Lent. (Do read with discernment - read everything with discernment based on our sacred scripture - Bible.) I'm certainly not against Lent but at the same time, we (as Christ followers) should ask and drive to the purpose of "why". What is the purpose of your participation in Lent?
Here's a good article about good outcomes and processes of Lent: http://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/why-bother-with-lent
Ultimately, Lent shouldn't be taken in lightly (not that I'm saying those who participate it do), but with careful prayer and petition we must observe our reason and desire for the purpose of Lent. Nevertheless, how you view Lent, the main epicenter of it all is Jesus. Jesus is our ultimate "Lent" and our ultimate reason.
I won't be participating in Lent. Again, not because I'm against it; rather, my need for Jesus is not just during Lent, but every day, second, and moment of my life. Of course, participating in Lent is an uncommon standard (note: positive connotation intended) just as one who does not participate drinking alcoholic beverages/wine. I find Lent in my life personally unhelpful and not productive. (I have done it before, several times.)
I hope my friends, who do partake in Lent, may be more deeply rooted with Jesus and His Word; in which, may be supremely evident in and out of social life.
